Zadar is a walled,
medieval Croatian city on the northern stretch of the Adriatic
Sea between Rijeka and Split and close to Sibenik. The city is
many thousands of years old and was for many centuries the
capital of Dalmatia. Zadar is well known for its impressive
Romanesque churches, in particular the pre-Romanesque church of
St. Donat, which dates back to the ninth century. This
attractive region has various national parks and over 300
islands and islets, numerous coves and beaches and cultural and
historic monuments. Yachting tourism is also very popular, as
are all forms of water sports. Cultural and entertainment
programmes round off the array of attractions.
