Umag is a small town
and port on the north-west coast of Istria, about 40 kilometres
from Trieste. The Romans discovered Umacus, as they called it,
as an ideal location for a summer residence and those
illustrious times are reflected in the many Venetian buildings
in the town’s old quarter. Today, Umag with its mild climate,
lush Mediterranean vegetation and turquoise waters is an
internationally popular holiday destination offering a host of
excursion options: the ocean, beaches, green countryside,
aquatic and other sporting facilities on the coast and
mountaineering and caving inland. Umag also offers superb
holiday accommodation, wellness facilities, a range of cultural
events, colourful, traditional festivals and a rich variety of
excellent cuisine. The tourist industry began to flourish at the
beginning of the 20th century and now provides the mainstay of
the town’s economy. Umag is also well known as a sporting venue,
attracting numerous top tennis players to the Croatian Open
Umag, the International Tennis Championship of Croatia that is
held here every year.
