| The largest city on the Adriatic Coast, Split is not only a hub with road and sea connections to numerous summer resorts, but
also has its own long tradition as a tourist destination. The town’s first tourist guide was published in 1894. The 1700
years of tradition are apparent in a variety of archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, not least of which is the
Palace of Diocletian, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. The city’s historic significance can be followed through Split’s
many museums, and its art galleries make for a rewarding visit. Split is also a major sports centre, offering numerous
opportunities for almost all types of water and other sports. Pleasures of the palate are plentiful with restaurants and wine
cellars offering local specialities. The city's coves hold several beautiful beaches, including Bacvice, a sandy beach set
almost in the heart of the city. |
