Pula is a port town in
the south-western part of Istria. The natural beauty of the
surrounding countryside and the clear, blue waters of the
Adriatic Sea have made it an internationally popular summer
resort. The town is also well known for its ancient Roman
buildings, the most prominent being the amphitheatre dating from
the first century A:D, which is still used for various events
such as the Croatian Film Festival, the Pop Music Festival
"Arena", and the Art & Music Festival with rock music. The
narrow lanes of the old town quarter still have Roman paving
stones. A favourite excursion point is the nearby Brijuni
national park, the former residence of Josip Broz Tito. The
Adriatic coastal coves offers water lovers many options
including swimming, fishing, sailing and cliff diving, as well
as scuba diving to wrecks from Roman times and World War I. And
there are plenty of large and small islands to explore.
