Picturesque Pag, a
well-preserved medieval town located on the island of the same
name. Founded in the 15th century and built in accordance with
plans by Dalmatian Renaissance architect Juraj Dalmatinac, Pag
offers a wealth of historic monuments such as St. Mary's Church
in the central square; the old tower, town walls and the Duke’s
Palace. Many ecclesiastical relics and paintings are found at
the Benedictine Convent, which has also preserved the ancient
tradition of baking ‘baskotins’, a dry crispy bread. Salt is
still produced at the salt works, which are as old as Pag
itself, and agriculture and fishing also play an important
economic role. Pag sheep’s cheese and Pag lace are hallmarks of
the island. Folklore and carnivals in both winter and summer are
a centuries-old tradition, rich in culture as well as extremely
entertaining. Well worth a visit.
