The island of Krk is
one of the oldest and most popular holiday resorts on the
Adriatic. Tourism on the island is believed to have started in
1866, when the Society for Town Improvement issued the first
picture postcard. Today, Krk attracts visitors from all over the
world. Its typical Mediterranean landscape, narrow, meandering
alleyways and picturesque shale beaches have lent the town its
charming character for centuries. But contemporary life has not
passed the town by. Beautiful villas and houses abound outside
the old city walls. Tourist accommodation ranges from top-class
hotels, guest houses and apartments to camp sites. The climate
is extremely pleasant, ideal for all water sports and for
visiting the underwater life and corals of the small island of
Plavnik. Summer sees many traditional local festivals, including
the colourful Krk summer festival from 16 July - 24 August. The
mild winter climate also attracts many visitors in the carnival
season during January and February.
